All Creatures’ favourite animal books

September 21, 2019

If you’re a pet owner or animal lover who also enjoys reading, there’s some great literature out there. Some sad, some uplifting and some funny… it really depends on what you want to get out of your reading experience.

The team here at our Sandy Lane practice has compiled a little list of some top-selling reads inspired by different animals, so take your pick.

And if any of these make you decide to get a(nother) pet of your own, don’t forget to register them with us as soon as possible, so we can support you to keep them happy and healthy.

Rural:

All Creatures Great & Small by James Herriot

This is a wonderful series of tales from a real country vet, who ended up dealing with a wide variety of hilarious situations on farms and elsewhere in the Yorkshire Dales. It’s also very poignant at times, but never allows the reader to feel sad for long.

Dog:

Marley & Me by John Grogan

This novel, also made into a 2008 film featuring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, is an autobiographical account of a family’s 13 years with a badly behaved labrador retriever. It charts the family’s life through numerous ups and downs – and Marley, of course, is always at the centre. TISSUES WILL BE REQUIRED.

Cat:

Dewey the Library Cat: A True Story by Vicki Myron

Anyone who’s ever spent time with a cat will relate to aspects of this tale, which features a cat who is found by a librarian after being abandoned. ORDER MORE TISSUES.

Horse:

Black Beauty by Anna Sewell

Written from a horse’s point of view, Black Beauty explores life through a very different set of eyes than most novels – and this was particularly groundbreaking upon its publication 1877. It’s also a children’s literary classic, with good reason.

Chimpanzee:

We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy

Animals can easily seem related to us, let alone part of the family – and in the Cooke family, Fern the chimp is very much the sister of Rosemary. But various complications surface to put relationships in jeopardy and make central characters question their ethics and values. Thought-provoking.
